What should be the minimum % profit after all expenses for a business to be deemed successful.?

We have been selling on the Internet for about 5 years, mainly our own brand. We have reached a plateau at 750K/year. Although all expenses are covered including salaries, there is very little net profit left over at the end of the year. What would be considered a resonable net profit percentage for most companies?
Also, should a company show net profit to be deemed successful?
what does the owner’s salaries represent as a percent of sales? – that would really be considered part of the profit . If your salaries are 100,000 on 750,000 of sales and all your bills, payroll and income taxes are paid and you still have profit AND cash, I’d say you’re doing pretty good – How many hrs per yr do you work and what does your pay per hour come out to? Is it a figure you’re happy with?

I would like to create a business with the center focus around IT services and/or computer parts/services. I don’t know what would be profitable for a "over the web-only" kind of business. I have computer upgrade/repair and virus removal experience and have taken classes dealing with networking, client/server work, and information security. If anyone could please help point me in the right direction to possible profitable business ventures dealing with those things or other computer technologies I would definitely appreciate that. Thank you.
I do not have much workplace or consulting experience as I am still in college working toward my bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. I’m only 1 year away from graduation. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about not being able to beat the big chains as far as pricing and reputation goes.
I salute your entrepreneurial spirit, but I’m not really sure what you can do.
Unless you plan on somehow building your own hardware or stealing it, you’re not going to beat the prices of existing online computer parts retailers.
As far as online services go, you can offer server space, but that requires a bunch of servers, a facility to keep them in, a separate location where those servers are backed up to and a 24-hour staff. Again, you’re not going to beat the prices, or reputation, of established companies.
It seems like your expertise relies more on on-site work. Do you have workplace experience? Have you considered consulting?

I don’t have any experience relevant to operating a small business, and if possible I wish to avoid building one from scratch. Are there any websites which offer a variety of packages o this nature?
Wow, no having to work at anything,hey? Hopefully at a business that comes with preapproved customers too?
Your best bet is to get an issue of Entrepreneur magazine and go through the entire thing, then check out the other business magazines at Barnes & Noble. They have the beginnings of these, but it really depends on what field of merchandise you’re interested in.
